The department of education at Lodi Health provides ongoing educational and training opportunities for hospital employees, students, patients and their families and the Lodi community. Whether you are an expectant parent looking for a class on childbirth preparation or a nurse needing to renew a certification, you will find classes taught by educators who are experts in their fields.

Stuck in Lodi

Diabetes Support Group Lodi Health offers a diabetes support group for those living with diabetes. Diabetes can be a daunting diagnosis to face, and no one should have to do it alone. The support group is intended to augment rather than replace routine medical care. Stuck in Lodi aims to provide diabetes patients with expert information with a positive outlook and a sense of humor.

Stork tours

Parents-to-be are offered individual tours of Lodi Memorial Hospital Maternal Child Services. Prospective parents may view the labor, delivery and recovery areas of the hospital and ask questions of the nursing staff. Call 339.7879 to schedule a tour.

Total-joint replacement class

Lodi Health Outpatient Services Center offers a free, educational class for those planning to have total-joint-replacement surgery of the hip or knee at Lodi Health, West Campus, 800 S. Lower Sacramento Rd. Learn about preparations and exercises to do before surgery; the day of surgery and what to expect during the hospital stay; rehabilitation following surgery; techniques to decrease pain and swelling; and ways to promote maximum healing and return to normal function. Smoking-cessation class

Lodi Health offers an eight-session smoking-cessation class for those wishing to become smoke free. Classes are held weekly at Lodi Memorial Hospital, 975 S. Fairmont Ave., on Wednesdays from 3-4pm. Topics covered include benefits of quitting; ways to cope with quitting; how to deal with a craving; medications that help with withdrawal; and creating a support system. Lactation support group

Lodi Health offers The Lactation Club, a support group for breastfeeding moms that is held every Tuesday at 10am in Classroom A at Lodi Memorial Hospital, 975 S. Fairmont Ave., Lodi. Lactation consultants are readily available to answer questions and help with breastfeeding issues. A scale will also be on hand to weigh babies.

Childbirth preparation

Lodi Health offers a complimentary one-day childbirth-preparation class. Classes are held at Lodi Memorial Hospital, 975 S. Fairmont Ave., Lodi. For more information or to register, call 339-7520.

Breastfeeding: Getting off to a great start

Lodi Health offers Breastfeeding: Getting off to a Great Start, a free, one-session class covering the advantages of breastfeeding, basic anatomy, the breastfeeding process, common problems and solutions. Classes are held at Lodi Memorial Hospital, 975 S. Fairmont Ave., Lodi. Call 339.7520 to register.

Al-Anon Freedom to Change support group

Lodi Health offers Al-Anon Freedom to Change meetings for family and friends of problem drinkers. The group helps people to know what to do when someone close to them drinks too much. Meetings are offered several times each month, from 7pm-8:30pm at Lodi Memorial Hospital, 975 S. Fairmont Ave., Lodi.

Alateen support group

Lodi Health offers Alateen support group meetings for teenagers dealing with the problem of alcoholism or chemical dependency in friends and loved ones. The meets are held at Lodi Memorial Hospital on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month.

Better Breather’s Club

Lodi Health offers Better Breathers’ respiratory-support group for people and their family members with breathing problems including asthma, bronchitis and emphysema. Participants will learn how to cope with chronic-lung disease, understand lungs and how they work and use medications and oxygen properly. The group meets the first Tuesday of each month, from 10-11am, at Lodi Memorial Hospital West, 800 S. Lower Sacramento Rd., Lodi. Pre-registration is recommended.

The Beat Goes On

Lodi Health offers a free cardiac support group the first Tuesday of each month at Lodi Health West, 800 S. Lower Sacramento Rd. The Beat Goes On cardiac support group is a community-based, non-profit group that offers practical tools for healthy living to heart disease patients, their families and caregivers. Its mission is to provide community awareness that those with heart disease can live well through support meetings and educational forums. Upcoming topics include exercise, stress management and nutrition counseling services. Free blood-pressure screenings are provided. All are welcomed to attend. Pre-registration is recommended.

Adult children with aging relatives support group

Lodi Health offers an Adult Children with Aging Relatives support group the second Wednesday of each month at the Hutchins Street Square Senior Center, 125 S. Hutchins St., Lodi. For more information, call 369-4443 or 369-6921.

Bariatric Surgical Forum
